Shepherds Conference 2025

From May 21st to 24th, 2025, over 400 participants from churches across German-speaking countries gathered in Wittenberg for this year’s German Shepherds Conference. The conference was entirely dedicated to the topic of biblical eldership – a matter of utmost importance in an age marked by spiritual instability and increasing demands on church leaders. The goal was clear: To equip men in ministry with biblical clarity, encouragement, and a renewed vision for their calling.

Over the course of four days, the participants – primarily men in church leadership – immersed themselves in rich theological teaching, personal reflection, and meaningful fellowship. Rather than offering a mere overview, the sessions consistently directed the hearts of the men toward their Head Shepherd, Jesus Christ.

The Sessions of the Shepherds Conference

Carey Hardy opened the conference with a message on biblical church leadership, emphasizing the importance of a plurality of elders and the role of a »first among equals.« In subsequent messages, he outlined the qualifications and responsibilities of elders and deacons based on 1 Timothy 3 and Titus 1.

Alexander Strauch delivered a moving exposition of Paul’s farewell address to the Ephesian elders in Acts 20, highlighting the critical role of being a spiritiual example, vigilance, and faithful shepherding.

Tim Kelly presented a two-part message on James as a model shepherd. Drawing from the opening verses of the Epistle of James, he showed how elders are called to shepherd suffering believers through trials—with joy, wisdom from God, and confidence that God answers prayer.

Another key focus of the conference was the home life of elders. Christian Andresen reminded the audience that God cares deeply about how men — especially elders — lead their homes and marriages. Spiritual leadership is inseparable from personal example.

In his message, Dr. Benedikt Peters called elders to be men of the sanctuary—marked by godly fear, spiritual integrity, and priestly responsibility before God. Men full of the fear of the Lord and men of prayer; men who constantly labor in light of the biblical promises, as written in the Book of James:

»The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much.« (James 5:16)

The 2025 German Shepherds Conference was a deeply encouraging and spiritually strengthening event. Through the faithful exposition of Scripture, heartfelt worship, and the unity of a shared calling, the men were equipped and realigned in their service to Christ and His church. The lasting impact of these days will be felt in local congregations throughout the German-speaking world – to the glory of God and the good of His people.
